Troop History
Troop 889 has a history of excellence and service. It was chartered in 1991 with less than 15 scouts. As of March 2012, Troop 889 has had 79 Scouts earn their Eagle Rank. Troop 889 has been a long time recipient of the National Quality Unit Award.
At present, we maintain a roster of 115 boys. The current Scoutmaster is Mike Abrams and Vince Massey is the Scoutmaster (elect). Dan Draz is the newly appointed Committee Chair, taking over the role when Tim Higgins steps down next month. Other adult leaders are listed in the Troop Roster.
Troop 889 meets from 7:30 - 8:30 pm on Monday evenings in the Gymnasium at Wheatland Salem United Methodist Church (WSUMC). Wheatland Salem United Methodist Church is our Chartering Organization and is located on the southeast corner of the intersection of Book Rd. and 95th St. in Naperville, IL. Troop meetings are held all but one Monday night each month. The Monday when there is no regularly scheduled Troop meeting, is reserved for the Patrol Leaders Conference (PLC). Refer to the Troop calendar for exact meeting dates.
Troop 889 runs an active year long program, meaning, the Troop has an outing every month of the year. Some examples of our local and weekend programs include:
Camporalls/Camporees
Mammoth Caves
Devils Lake
Great Lakes Naval Base
Grant’s Pilgrimage - Galena
Great Lakes Centennial Jamboree
Cabin Campout
.22 shooting – Aurora Sportsmen’s Club
Brunswick Zone (Lock In)
Ski Trip
In addition to local and weekend programs, we are also actively engaged in a variety of High Adventure Programs having previously sent Scouts to:
Philmont Boy Scout Ranch (backpacking)
Isle Royale National Park for (backpacking)
Boundary Waters Wilderness Area (canoeing)
Florida National High Adventure (Seabase)
National Boy Scout Jamboree
Currently, our summer camp takes place at Camp Phillips. Camp Phillips is located in Rice Lake, Wisconsin, north of Eau Claire, WI. This scout camp provides a world of scouting adventure on 1450 acres of paradise including five lakes and accesses many Northern Wisconsin Rivers. We charter several comfortable busses and our Scouts ride to and from camp in style.
Lastly, an effective Troop needs active parent volunteers to help operate a high quality Scouting program for our youth. While Troop 889 has a strong parent continent, we are always looking for additional parent volunteers to support the programs developed by our Scouts. Even a small role has significant impact!
For more information about volunteer opportunities within our Troop, please contact Vince Massey (Scoutmaster elect) or Dan Draz (Committee Chair Elect) for more information.
